How We Spot a Toy Trend Before It's Everywhere
Everyone wants to sell the next viral toy. The problem is that by the time a toy is "everywhere," the factories are booked, the margins are thin, and you're racing everyone else for the same container slot. Spotting early is the whole game. Here's how we actually do it.
1. We watch the screens, not the catalogs
Toy trends in 2026 start on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels — not at toy fairs. A dancing cactus, a fidget gadget, a mini dishwasher that actually works: the pattern is almost always the same. A video performs well, retailers see it, and then the factories scramble.
So we track engagement, not just views. A toy with 40 million views and a flat comment section is entertainment. One with 800,000 views and comments full of "where can I buy this" is a pending order wave.
2. We read the factory pulse
We're in Shenzhen, in the middle of the world's toy ecosystem. When a factory starts asking for a particular mold, motor, or battery pack across three different customers, that's a signal no algorithm gives us early enough. Suppliers feel demand before retailers do.
That's the advantage of being on the ground. Our weekly calls with partner factories are half relationship, half market research.
3. We filter for "will it last a shipping cycle?"
Not every viral toy deserves your shelf space. A trend needs to survive the gap between order and delivery — usually 4 to 8 weeks. We ask three questions before we pick anything:
- Is it a character or a behavior? Character crazes fade fast. Behavior-based toys (something a kid does) have longer legs.
- Does it survive a drop? The viral version on camera is often a prototype. The factory version needs to survive real use — or your returns eat the margin.
- Does it have certs? A toy you can't certify is a toy you can't sell. We check this before we get attached to it.
4. We time the buy
The goal isn't to be first — it's to be early enough that the factory has capacity and the price is sane, but late enough that the trend is proven. In practice that window is short. When we're confident, we move fast: sample in days, not weeks.
The toys that make money are the ones you could explain in one sentence and a customer asks "can I buy it right now?"
The honest caveat
We get it wrong sometimes. Nobody has a crystal ball. But we've built the process so that when we do miss, we miss small — a tested sample, a short pilot order, not a warehouse of a trend that never landed.
Every toy we feature in our videos has been through this process. You're not watching a random product. You're watching the shortlist.
